Countdown 15: Departing from the Alpha

Chapter 01

When I finished handling my adoptive parents' funeral, it was already past midnight.

I took out my phone and noticed that seven days had passed.

In all that time, my mate, Alpha Lucas, hadn't sent me a single message...not even a simple check-in.

"Evelyn, my daughter, your father and I have been looking for you for eighteen years. Now that your adoptive parents are gone, come back with us to Silver Moon Pack. Let us take care of you."

After the funeral, a well-dressed woman tightly gripped my hand and wept uncontrollably.

Just a few days ago, my biological parents had found me.

Unlike my adoptive parents, who were Omegas at the very bottom of the hierarchy, my real parents were the Alpha and Luna of the Silver Moon Pack.. noble and wealthy.

I glanced at the gravestone etched with my adoptive parents' warm smiles.

My eyes welled up, but I couldn't make a decision so quickly.

"I'll think about it," I said softly.

I had lived as an Omega for so long that it felt impossible to suddenly step into the role of an Alpha's daughter.

"No problem. Take your time. We'll wait for your answer."

After parting with my biological mother, I returned to the house I shared with Lucas.

When I opened the door, I saw our photo on the shelf covered in dust.

I had been so flustered when I got the news about my adoptive parents' death that I left in a hurry.

The vase I accidentally knocked over was still shattered on the floor. The flowers scattered around it had wilted.. just like my broken heart.

The funeral took seven days from start to finish.

And Lucas, my Alpha mate, hadn't contacted me once during those seven days.

I had tried every possible way to reach him.

Our bond link was repeatedly blocked.

I had over thirty missed calls on my phone, all with the same response: "No answer."

As I numbly scrolled through my call log, a notification popped up.

It was a post from Daisy.. Lucas's ex-girlfriend.

"Today, I'm your little bunny."

The picture showed her in a revealing bunny costume, posing seductively.

A muscular arm wrapped around her waist. I recognized it immediately.. it was Lucas's arm. He was even wearing the engagement ring we picked out together.

Staring at the photo, I couldn't even cry.

Maybe I had already run out of tears during the funeral.

When my mom asked if I wanted to move to Silver Moon Pack, my hesitation was mostly because of Lucas.

I had thought our relationship.. an Omega and an Alpha falling in love and getting engaged.. was a romantic fairy tale.

Now it felt like a cruel joke.

Click.

The door unlocked.

"Evelyn?"

Lucas stepped inside wearing a tailored suit, looking sharp. But all he saw was me sitting silently in a dark corner, my eyes brimming with tears.

"Evelyn, are you okay? What happened to the vase at the entrance?"

He grabbed my icy hands, his face full of concern.

"Why are your hands so cold? And why are you sitting on the floor? Do you want to get sick and worry me to death?"

I pulled my hand away.

"Where were you just now?"

My direct question startled him. But he quickly recovered and responded.

"Sweetheart, I've been patrolling the border with Beta Simon these past few days."

"Really? My friend saw you leaving a hotel today."

His face paled for a split second before he calmly replied.

"So what? I'm an Alpha. Isn't it normal for me to have social obligations? Are you spying on me now because you're bored at home?"

Guilt flickered in his eyes. I could tell. He had spent the day with Daisy.

"I was just asking because you didn't answer any of my calls."

My hands curled into fists as I fought to keep my emotions in check.

Lucas frowned. When he saw the thirty missed calls on my phone, guilt swept over his face. He seemed ready to explain.

"Evelyn…"

"It's fine. I understand you're busy."

I wiped my eyes, stood up, and swept the broken vase and dried flowers into the trash.

Lucas looked uneasy and followed me closely.

"Are you upset? I know I've been busy, but maybe you should visit your parents for a few days. I can send you some money if you need it."

I paused.

Looking at his concerned face, my head spun.

He didn't even know my adoptive parents were attacked by rogues on their way to our engagement ceremony.

The engagement ceremony that would never happen now.

"No, I'm just tired. I didn't sleep well last night."

Lucas shrugged, grabbed his pajamas, and headed to the bathroom. "Then go to bed early tonight."

As the sound of running water filled the bathroom, a message popped up on his phone.

It was from "Bunny Hugs."

"Master, when are you coming back?"

Disgust churned in my stomach as I stared at the words.

He had saved Daisy's number as "Bunny Hugs." Their chat history was filthy and shameless.

I clenched my fists, forcing myself to stay calm.

I glanced at the bathroom door, then walked into the living room and called my biological mother.

"Mom, I'll come to Silver Moon Pack at the end of the month."

The end of the month..the day of my supposed engagement ceremony.

By then, I'd give Lucas a ‘surprise.'

"That's wonderful! We've already prepared your new home. Your brothers will be so happy to see you."

Her voice was full of joy, but then she hesitated and asked carefully, "But moving here means leaving Alpha Lucas behind. Are you sure? You two are engaged."

Thinking of Lucas, my heart twisted in pain before settling into calm determination.

"I'm breaking up with him. I never want to see him again."

Chapter 02

My mother seemed to sense the slight tremor in my voice and gently comforted me.

"It's alright, I'll send a private jet to pick you up. Silver Moon has many strong and handsome wolves for you to choose from, Evelyn. Don't waste your tears on someone who doesn't deserve them."

"Okay. I'll meet you at the airport."

Just as I hung up the phone, the bathroom door opened, and Vincent stepped out with a towel wrapped around his waist.

"Who are you meeting at the airport?" he asked.

I paused, lowering my gaze slightly. "My mom."

He hesitated, frowning.

"Is she coming for our engagement ceremony?"

He assumed I meant my adoptive mother.

For some reason, I was too tired to correct him.

Lucas looked at me seriously and said, "Honey, I know this might be hard to accept, but when we get engaged, many high-ranking wolf leaders will attend. It wouldn't be appropriate for your parents to be there…"

My adoptive parents were omegas.. just like me. The lowest rank in the pack.

But to me, they were the best parents in the world. They gave me endless love despite having no blood ties.

"What about me?"

I looked into Lucas's eyes, feeling a deep sense of hurt. "Am I just another lowly omega to you? Why did you say you loved me? Why did you propose to me?"

"That's different. We're mates."

Lucas looked uncomfortable, even irritated. "Forget it. I knew you wouldn't understand our upper-class world."

I glanced at the date on my phone.. June 15th.

Fifteen days until I left for Silver Moon.

I couldn't be bothered to argue with him anymore. "I'll understand soon enough."

"Hmm." Lucas lay down on the bed, turning to his phone with a mysterious smile.

"You're going to be Luna soon. You better start learning proper etiquette."

I ignored him, turning away and closing my eyes.

After a while, I heard him set his phone down and felt him move closer, wrapping his arms around me.

The faint scent of another she-wolf lingered on him, making my stomach churn. I stiffened, struggling to suppress the urge to push him away.

"Babe, where's your ring?"

Lucas touched my hand, realizing the engagement ring was missing.

I replied calmly, "I took it off while showering and forgot to put it back on."

He mumbled disapprovingly, "Don't forget it next time."

In my heart, I silently told him..

Lucas, there won't be a "next time."

The night was quiet, and Lucas quickly fell asleep.

But every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was his hand—wearing the engagement ring—wrapped around Daisy's waist.

Unable to sleep, I got up and picked up his phone. I opened his messages.

The first thing I saw made my blood run cold.

"Alpha, were you satisfied with last night's service?"

Attached were explicit photos.. far too revealing to be misunderstood.

I remembered my reaction the first time I saw these messages.. how my hands shook and my mind went blank.

I didn't want to believe it. I couldn't believe Lucas would betray me.

But as I scrolled through their conversations.. page after page, line after lin.. My heart turned numb.

It had been going on for three years.

I came across one particular message that cut me the deepest.

"I've been with her for five years. Honestly, I'm so bored of it."

"She's just an omega. She doesn't deserve me. But since we're mates, breaking up might drive her crazy. Hahaha."

"You're the one I really love, my little bunny."

Every word stabbed me like a knife, leaving my heart in shreds.

The next morning, I got up as usual to prepare breakfast.

My phone reminded me—it was our fifth anniversary.

We had planned to go to the beach, take wedding photos, and relive our first meeting.

But there were only fifteen days left until I left for good. I decided to end everything there—our five years, our broken dreams.

After breakfast, Lucas kissed me on the cheek, straightened his tie, and prepared to leave.

"I won't be back tonight. I have a business meeting."

I froze.

He had completely forgotten our anniversary and our plans.

Before I could respond, the doorbell rang.

A deliveryman stood there, holding a massive bouquet of roses.

"These are for you!"

Lucas stiffened. "Why did they send them here—"

He quickly corrected himself. "I mean, honey, I ordered these for you. Do you like them?"

Just then, his phone lit up on the table.

I glanced at the screen and saw a message from "Bunny Hugs."

"Baby, when will my 999 roses arrive?"

Lucas snatched his phone, looking flustered.

"I have to go."

Before leaving, he plucked one rose from the bouquet.

I watched as he hurried out the door.

After a while, a message popped up on my cell phone, unsurprisingly.

Sure enough, Daisy had posted a new picture.. biting a rose petal.

The caption read:

"Who cares about 999 roses? All I want is your true heart."

I smiled faintly.

I didn't want his roses or his heart, anymore.

I stood up, picked up the bright red roses, and tossed them into the trash, along with the last remnants of my love for him.

Chapter 03

Everyone in the pack knew one thing.. Lucas loved me.

Before we got together, rumors painted him as cold and ruthless, a regular at nightclubs and bars, with more girlfriends than anyone could count.

But after we fell in love, he changed completely.

He gave up all his old habits. Afraid I might feel insecure, he'd even send me pictures during his outings to prove there were no other women around.

Most people thought we were just a fling.

After all, Lucas was the pack's most prestigious Alpha, while I was a girl adopted by a pair of Omega servants.

If it hadn't been for them, I might've ended up as a rogue—an outcast with no identity.

We came from completely different worlds.

That became painfully clear at a banquet, where a wealthy young lady deliberately spilled red wine on me and mocked me for being a low-born wolf.

Lucas didn't hesitate. He threw a cup of hot water on her and ordered his men to throw her out, banning her from ever attending another pack event.

It was in that moment everyone finally understood..

Lucas wasn't playing around.

He couldn't live without me.

And for a while, I believed I'd found the one I'd walk through life with.

I never doubted our love. But love can change in an instant.

After Lucas left, I started packing my things, carrying five years of memories with me.

I threw away every single item I'd carefully picked for our wedding.

This house, which was never truly mine, was finally wiped clean of my presence.

The only thing left was our dusty photo together.

I hesitated for a moment. Instead of burning it, I tucked it away.

It wasn't just a photo.. It was five years of my youth. I couldn't let go that easily.

Lucas came home late that night.

The moment he stepped inside, he noticed something was off.

"Did you clean the house? It feels... emptier."

I nodded lightly.

He walked over to where we used to keep our photo and asked, "Where's our picture?"

It wasn't just any picture.

On the back, he had written: **Lucas loves Evelyn, forever and always.**

The photo had been taken by accident. Because of his status, we rarely took pictures together. That one time, a paparazzo caught us on a date.

Lucas didn't have the best reputation then—he switched girlfriends often. People called me "the Alpha's new toy."

I didn't care, but Lucas did.

So right there and then, he grabbed my hand, pulled me close, and snapped a selfie. He even posted it online with the caption:

**My mate. My one and only.**

After that, everyone knew I was the Alpha's true love.

Thinking back, my chest ached.

"It's an old photo," I explained. "It's time for a new one."

"You're right," Lucas said casually. "We'll take another one after the engagement when we move to the new house."

He didn't seem to notice that every trace of our love was gone.

His phone kept buzzing during our conversation. He barely looked up from his messages.

As I turned to head to the bedroom, he suddenly grabbed my hand.

His brows furrowed in concern. "What happened to your hand?"

I glanced down. While packing earlier, I must've cut myself on some broken glass. Blood had started to seep out.

Lucas immediately fetched the first-aid kit. He gently cleaned the wound, his fingers careful and steady.

Watching him fuss over me, I couldn't help but ask, "Lucas, do you know what day it is?"

His body tensed.

I swallowed the ache in my throat and said softly, "It's our fifth anniversary."

Guilt flickered across his face before he quickly covered it up.

"Of course, I remembered! I even ordered flowers for you. Did you like them?"

Thinking about the wrong-colored roses I'd received, I forced a smile.

"Yeah."

"You're upset I didn't take you to the beach, aren't you?" he guessed. "I've just been so busy with work. Don't worry.. I'll make it up to you."

He squeezed my hand gently, trying to comfort me.

Just then, his phone rang again.

He glanced at the screen, hesitated, and then declined the call.

But the phone rang again. And again.

"Go ahead and answer it," I said quietly. "I'll finish treating my hand myself. It might be something urgent."

Work had always been his excuse.

This time, I said it first.. Not because I wanted to be the understanding Luna he dreamed of, but because I no longer cared.

Lucas looked guilty but stepped outside to take the call.

When he came back, he wrapped his arms around me and said, "Our engagement ceremony is coming up soon. Your adoptive parents can't make it, so I asked Daisy to be your bridesmaid. She's from a very noble family. Trust me, you'll get along."

Hearing that name, I instinctively pushed him away.

Lucas looked at me, shocked. "Evelyn, what's wrong—"

"It's fine," I interrupted, forcing the words out.

This engagement ceremony wasn't meant for me anyway.

The day of the ceremony would also be the day I boarded a plane to my new life.

That night, as I scrolled through social media, a new post popped up.

Daisy.

She was dressed in an elegant white gown, holding a bouquet of flowers. She looked like a bride.

Her caption read:

**This way, it's like we're at the wedding together. Right?**
