The Blind Deception

Chapter 1

The moment I found out I was pregnant, I was kidnapped, and my eyes were scooped out brutally.

Anthony Dixon sent the culprit to prison.

Lying in my hospital bed, unwilling to wake up because of the devastating news of losing my sight.

In a state of blurred consciousness, I overheard Anthony talking to the doctor.

"Mr. Dixon, all you wanted was Miss Ball's corneas. Why did you have to gouge out her eyes entirely? Even if she has surgery later, she might never see again. Was it necessary to be so extreme?"

"She's blind now. But it doesn't matter. I'll take care of her for the rest of her life. After all, if I hadn't taken out her eyes, Lisa would definitely suspect something."

"I promised Nancy Edwards that I would marry her in a grand ceremony. If Lisa Ball isn't blind, Nancy wouldn't be able to live under her nose. Also, the child I have with Nancy looks just like me, and I can't risk Lisa noticing."

Tears of blood slid down my face.

...

"Don't say too much. Just follow my plan. The cornea transplant was successful. Now, arrange for an abortion and remove her uterus. Make sure it's thorough—don't let her discover anything."

"When she wakes up, Nancy will also be out of danger. I'll bring her and the child into the house next door to Lisa's place so she can take care of Lisa."

The doctor wiped away his sweat, reluctant.

"Mr. Dixon, please reconsider it. After all, Lisa's child is also your child! She's already lost her sight, but if you make her lose the child as well, that will be her end!"

Anthony reached out and wiped the blood from the corners of my eyes.

His voice full of regret.

"She's already blind. Even if she gives birth, she won't be able to take care of the child. I'm doing this for her good. Besides, I don't want our child to have a blind mother, he'd be ridiculed."

"I promised Nancy I would bring her and our child back to the Dixon family, give her a grand wedding. After all, she lost her sight saving me. I can't go back on my word."

"As for Lisa... I'll just be her eyes for the rest of my life. That should be enough."

The doctor sighed deeply as he looked at my mutilated eyes.

"Such a karmic bond... Lisa really loves you. You could've found someone else to perform the surgery for her, why go this far... but it's too late now. I've said all I can."

"Prepare for the surgery, make sure it's clean, and don't leave any traces. I don't want her to be in too much pain when she wakes up."

The doctor quickly left the room.

Anthony took out his phone and sent a voice message to his assistant.

"The kidnapper didn't say anything wrong, did he? Go warn him before he goes to prison. As per our agreement, make sure the final payment reaches his family. Don't let Lisa find out."

Blood continued to drip from my hollow eye sockets, soaking the pillow beneath me.

Anthony kept wiping my body with hot water.

But I still couldn't stop feeling cold.

Three days ago, I found out I was pregnant. I sent him the news.

The moment I stepped out of the hospital, I was kidnapped and taken to an abandoned factory.

I screamed for my life, even slashing my wrist to send him a message for help.

But he never responded.

It was only when the kidnapper began gouging out my eyes that he arrived, bringing the police along.

I had once asked him why he didn't save me.

He just said he was too busy with a company meeting and hadn't noticed my message.

I was rushed to the hospital that night, but the eyes I lost would never return.

He promised he would take care of me for the rest of my life, that he would be my eyes.

But it turned out it was all part of his premeditated plan.

The happiness I thought we had was nothing but a mirage.

Lies and hurt were the true reality between us.

I struggled to sit up, but soon, my body was injected with anesthesia.

I could hear the nurse's sighs nearby.

Anthony gently kissed my forehead.

"Don't worry, it'll be over soon, Lisa. I'll wait for you."

Cold instruments stirred inside me.

My broken heart went cold too.

During the surgery, Anthony stayed by Nancy's bedside, never leaving.

It wasn't until I regained consciousness that he rushed to my side.

He took my hand and gently pressed it against his cheek.

"Lisa, it's me. Can you feel me? Is anything still uncomfortable?"

"Tell me if it hurts. I'll have them change your medication."

I couldn't see his face, but I could hear the tremor and worry in his voice.

His acting was truly exceptional.

The scent of perfume filled my nose.

I reached out and tentatively touched his cheek.

"I'm fine. You haven't rested for a while, have you? Sleep for a bit. I'll stay here with you."

Relieved that I wasn't suspicious, he sighed and his breathing slowly calmed.

Just then, my phone received an audio message.

The person sending the message seemed to know I couldn't see.

It began to play in blind assistance mode.

The voices continued.

"Today is Betty's first birthday. Daddy came all the way from abroad to be with us. Isn't our baby happy?"

"Daddy..."

The woman's playful laugh echoed.

"Anthony, thank you for coming. I wish I could see it. I'm sure the gift you prepared for Betty is precious. She must like Daddy more than me, her blind mother."

Anthony's voice was low, full of guilt.

"I'm sorry... I'll find a way to treat your eyes. Once I return, I'll arrange your surgery promptly. I'll bring Betty back to the Dixon family. Don't worry, I'll keep my promise."

"Nancy, thank you for saving me. You've endured so much hardship."

"Betty is my only child in this life. I promise, everything I possess belong to her and your. From now on, every holiday, I'll be with you, never leaving you alone."

The birthday song began to play.

The two of them laughed, holding the child.

Chapter 2

After a brief pause, the next audio message automatically played.

Just as Anthony had promised, every holiday thereafter, he stayed by Nancy's side.

The gifts he gave her changed from plush toys to the biggest amusement park in the city.

His indulgence and favoritism were clear.

Furthermore, he had been preparing the wedding for half a year.

Everything was arranged according to Nancy's preferences.

From the very beginning, he never planned for me to attend this wedding.

I laughed bitterly.

I didn't continue listening.

I sent a voice message to my best friend, asking her to help me buy a plane ticket to leave in three days.

I would arrange for surgery at an overseas hospital.

As the authorized person, she would cancel all my domestic documents.

She didn't think much about it, assuming I had seen through Anthony's true face.

Her words were filled with relief.

I put down my phone and fell into a deep sleep.

When I opened my eyes again, I was startled by the sound of Anthony crying.

He shoved the hospital report into my hands, crying uncontrollably.

"Lisa, I'm sorry. I was too late. The doctor said our child is gone. And because of the heavy blow to your abdomen, you will never be able to get pregnant again..."

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. It's my fault. I came too late."

"Don't be sad, okay? If you really want a child, we can adopt one after you're discharged. With me around, no one will dare to talk behind your back. I'll treat the adopted child as my own..."

Clearly, I was the one who lost the child, yet he seemed more upset than I was.

His acting was perfect, and I was too tired to expose him.

After a long silence, I touched the thick paper in my hand and nodded slowly.

Anthony's tears fell onto my hand as he pulled me into his embrace.

"Lisa, don't be afraid. No matter what happens in the future, I'll always be by your side."

"After the wedding, we'll never be apart. I'll be your eyes, your walking stick. I'll show you the most beautiful sights in the world. Every gust of wind, every falling leaf, I'll describe them all to you."

Our chests pressed together tightly.

But our heartbeats were out of sync.

After a long while, Anthony struggled to speak.

"But the wedding is already prepared, and you're not fully recovered. I'm afraid..."

"Find someone to stand in for me. Don't embarrass the Dixon family."

I knew what he was trying to say.

Rather than putting myself in a passive position, I might as well take the initiative.

At least I could save face.

Anthony was surprised by my change in attitude.

But once he achieved his goal, he didn't care to dig deeper.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a reply from my best friend.

I quickly silenced it.

Anthony heard the mention of going abroad and froze for a moment.

"Going abroad? Lisa, what are you going abroad for?"

"Nothing, probably just some news notification. With my condition, where else can I go?"

He didn't think much of it and hugged me even tighter, his tone filled with concern.

"Your eyes aren't well right now. If you need anything, just tell me, I'll handle it for you."

"Anthony, I want to leave the hospital."

His expression turned tense.

"No, you haven't recovered yet. I won't agree to it."

I gently traced his arm with my hand, swaying it lightly.

"Didn't you promise me we'd adopt a child? How about we also find a nanny along the way? We can go together, I just want to clear my mind."

It was the first time I had asked him for something after the incident.

Anthony couldn't resist me and softened, agreeing.

On the way to the domestic service center, Anthony's phone buzzed with message notifications several times.

I pretended not to hear and turned my head, feigning sleep.

But my hand sneaked out from the gap in the seat and grasped a child's toy.

He knew I couldn't see, so he didn't bother to make his act too perfect.

This five-year-long deception was about to end.

When we arrived, as soon as we entered the door, I heard Nancy's voice.

Exactly the same as in the audio clip.

At the same time, the laughter of a child echoed.

"Daddy—"

Anthony's face shifted, afraid I might suspect something, and hurriedly explained.

"Don't misunderstand, this is the nanny I found for you. She had an illness before, and I helped her for a while. She's a single mother, life hasn't been easy for her. This child has no father, and has always called me that."

I smiled and nodded, unconcerned.

"What's her name? Is this the child you want to adopt?"

"Yes, her name is Betty. She's three years old, a girl."

Worried I might disagree, Anthony quickly tried to convince me.

"Her mother can't afford to raise her, so when she knew we were adopting, she contacted me."

"With her mom taking care of her, you'll feel more at ease. Maybe your condition will even improve faster."

"Don't worry, this child is sensible and won't cause us trouble. Legally, you're the child's mother."

Chapter 3

I fell silent for a moment.

Anthony's face grew anxious.

Until I agreed to his request.

Anthony sighed in relief and hurriedly took the child to handle the adoption paperwork.

He even forgot about me, standing there.

Just as he left, a group of employees gathered around me.

They thought I was deaf and blind and openly mocked me.

"Is this Dixon's blind fiancée? Her husband's already having an affair, and she still comes to adopt an illegitimate child? How pathetic."

"Who says otherwise? I heard her eyes were even dug out by Dixon himself, just to bring Miss Edwards back to the Dixon family! What a shame, such a fine girl, ruined like this."

"Does that mean she'll be living with Miss Edwards and Dixon's child every day? Blind, and her husband's sleeping with another woman right under her nose. What's left for her to live for? If I were her, I'd rather die..."

The mockery and whispers overwhelmed me, almost suffocating me.

I followed my memory to the office door.

Inside, I heard a familiar voice.

"Anthony, will this work? If I move into the Dixon family, Lisa won't find out, right? I don't want you two to argue because of me."

"Leave the rest to me. You just focus on taking care of Betty. Lisa can't see. As long as you're careful, she'll never know."

"Remember, take good care of her. She's also your benefactor."

Benefactor...

I thought back to the car accident three years ago that Anthony had been in.

Nancy's misrepresented gratitude.

I actually started to look forward to Anthony's reaction when he knew the truth.

An employee hurriedly brought in the contract, and when the door opened, they unintentionally called out Nancy's name.

Anthony's face immediately shifted to panic.

"Lisa? What are you doing here?"

"Don't misunderstand, it's just a coincidence. If you don't like it, I'll take her to change her name..."

Nancy said nothing, standing behind him with a mocking smile.

I forced a smile, suppressing my frustration, and shook my head.

"It's fine, it's just a coincidence. There are many coincidences in the world, no need to make a big deal of it."

"You go ahead. I'll wait for you outside."

Afraid I might doubt him, Anthony grabbed me and explained for a long time.

Listening to his panicked tone, I couldn't help but want to laugh.

To bring Nancy and the child into the Dixon family, he had gone so far as to orchestrate a kidnapping and gouge out my eyes.

Now that he got his wish, who was he acting for?

"Don't worry, I'm not that petty. Go ahead with the paperwork, I'll wait for you here."

The footsteps faded.

I took out my phone and confirmed the cancellation request my best friend had sent.

That evening, the wedding dress that Anthony had specially shipped from abroad was delivered to our house.

Dixon's parents, eager to welcome Nancy and Betty, had prepared a large feast.

I pretended my health hadn't recovered and stayed in my room to rest.

But downstairs, the sounds of the family laughing still managed to reach my ears.

Anthony's father was busy serving Betty food, holding a doll to make her laugh.

Anthony's mother, along with Anthony, was surrounding Nancy, helping her try on the wedding dress.

Compliments echoed around.

Nancy stood in the middle of the living room, smiling brightly.

The frustration that had built up in my chest finally exploded.

I stumbled back to my room.

But with my blindness, I couldn't even pack my things properly.

When the suitcase flipped over, Nancy suddenly appeared in front of me.

Her long, sharp high heels pressed harshly on the back of my hand.

I was sweating from the pain, but she bent down and whispered in my ear.

"Lisa, long time no see."

"You must have guessed who I am, right?"

"Three years ago, I accidentally hit Anthony, injuring his eyes. You took my cornea to save him, causing my blindness. Did you ever think that I'd return one day?"

"And did you ever think that his eyes would be gouged out by him to take revenge on you?"

"Seeing everything you hold dear being taken away by me, and yet you're still swallowing your pride—how pathetic!"

I struggled to get up.

But the heel on my hand grew heavier.

Before I could speak,

Nancy ripped my wedding dress.

Her heel twisted, and she fell heavily beside me.

I still didn't understand what was happening.

But the sound of Anthony's angry voice filled the air.

"Lisa, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind?"

"Nancy came up here to let you see if the wedding dress needs any alterations. Why are you acting crazy?"

Anthony's parents looked at me with displeasure.

Nancy weakly climbed onto his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, I just thought Lisa wouldn't be able to see the wedding dress, so I wanted her to feel the fabric and experience it. I didn't know which word I said triggered her, and suddenly she...”

“Don't blame Lisa, she didn't mean to.”

I collapsed on the floor, the corner of my lips curling into a cold smile.
