The Unreachable Lover

Chapter 1

In the dead of night.

A special ringtone suddenly rang out.

Forest loosened his hold on Rain and rubbed his eyes, picking up his phone.

The glaring light made Rain catch a glimpse of the caller ID - Rosy.

Rosy Summi.

Forest's phone had always had the same ringtone he set years ago with Rain; anyone calling him would hear that tune.

But now, the ringtone was different.

Clearly, Forest had set a special ringtone for this person, treating her differently.

He had given Rosy the most affectionate nickname and a unique ringtone.

All these had once belonged solely to Rain.

With a hint of bitterness, Rain closed her eyes.

It had been a year and a half since she and Forest had reconciled and married, yet she always felt as if she were dreaming.

This man had once vowed at their wedding, "I, Forest Land, will love only Rain Frost in this lifetime. A virtuous wife will help me achieve my dreams, and I shall reward her with countless riches!"

At that moment, all the women in S City envied Rain.

But in the year and a half since their marriage, Rain had endured Forest's petty squabbles with Rosy, leaving her physically and mentally exhausted.

In the darkness, Rain gazed at the handsome outline of the man, listening to him gently coaxing Rosy, and suddenly felt that it was time for her to leave.

However, today she had just discovered that she was pregnant, and she wanted to give Forest one more chance for the sake of their child.

But time was truly running out.

Perhaps sensing her disappointment, Forest quickly hung up the phone.

He pulled Rain back into his arms, tirelessly explaining, "It's nothing serious. Minnie just passed away, and Rosy couldn't sleep, so..."

Rain closed her eyes and replied lightly, "No need to explain."

"Minnie" was the little dog Forest had given to Rosy.

They had celebrated that dog's birthday together and had also put her to sleep together.

"Rain, here you go again! Can't you stop being so petty? I told you, I only see her as a sister. I know in my heart that she's just your substitute; I never..."

Forest instinctively paused before continuing, "I never had feelings for her."

Rain perfunctorily nodded, feeling like a lifeless rag doll.

Forest's words lacked conviction, even to himself.

The two fell into silence.

Rain suddenly recalled their reunion a year and a half ago.

She had returned from abroad, hearing that the executive president of the Frost Group had changed seven substitutes in the six years she had been gone.

Each one bore a resemblance to Rain.

And Rosy was the last of the seven substitutes Forest had found.

She was also the most similar to Rain.

Forest had bought Rosy a villa, luxury cars, and given her money; whatever she wanted, he provided.

Everyone knew she was merely a substitute.

But it didn't matter, as Rosy was favored, and Forest had turned her from a small internet celebrity into a rising star.

Rain remembered that their reunion happened in a large shopping mall.

At that time, Rosy was standing next to Forest, affectionately linking her arm with his.

The moment Forest saw Rain, he froze.

Rosy, upon seeing Rain's face and Forest's stunned reaction, immediately understood.

She tried to pull Forest away, but he shook off her hand, trembling, and told her to leave.

Rosy felt humiliated, stamped her foot in frustration, and shot Rain a jealous glare before leaving in disgrace.

Forest ran to Rain in the bustling mall, tightly embracing her as if trying to embed her into his bones.

"Rain, you're finally back!"

The dignified CEO was crying like a wronged child in the middle of the mall.

At that moment, Rain felt that nothing had changed between them.

Even with the six years that had passed, Forest still loved her just as deeply.

Forest took her home.

He bought her many beautiful clothes.

He took her to eat her favorite tiramisu cake.

To please her, he tore up the contract with Rosy.

He cut ties with Rosy.

Before Rain, Forest firmly told Rosy that the only person he loved was Rain Frost.

Rosy Summi cried as she asked him, "This woman abandoned you for six years, and you don't need any explanation?!"

Chapter 2

Forest Land, however, smiled and replied, "As long as Rain is back, nothing else matters."

The sharp ringtone continued to ring, and after Forest answered the call, he frowned slightly.

After a moment, he got out of bed and put on his coat. "She says she's outside. I'll go check."

Ten minutes later, Forest brought Rosy into the villa.

Rain Frost, barefoot, came downstairs and softly reminded him, "Forest, you said you wouldn't let her..."

Reappear in their lives.

But since their marriage, Rosy's shadow was everywhere.

"Today is an exception. Minnie is very important to Rosy; she got caught in the rain. If you're sensible, you'll go help her make a bowl of ginger soup."

Forest shot Rain a cold glance while telling Rosy to go take a shower first.

Rain bitterly smiled and headed into the kitchen.

Ten minutes later, Rain had prepared a steaming bowl of ginger soup.

Rosy emerged from the bathroom, wearing one of Rain's usual pajamas.

Forest stared at Rosy, who was still damp from the shower, momentarily dazed.

Rain handed the ginger soup to Rosy.

But Rosy leaned close to her ear and boasted, "Rain Frost, I've entered your domain; it only cost me a dog. Guess what will happen next?"

Rain tried to retract the ginger soup. "Disgusting imitator, if you don't want to drink it, I'll just pour it out."

"Thank you..."

Rosy suddenly snatched the ginger soup and intentionally spilled it on herself.

"Ah - so hot!"

Rosy yelped, tears streaming down her face as the soup splashed onto her legs, turning them red.

Forest rushed over, pushing Rain aside and carefully checking Rosy's injury.

"What were you thinking? Even if you're unhappy, there's no need to hurt yourself in front of me! I said this was an exception; what more do you want?!"

Forest shouted at Rain.

In her heart, Rain silently counted: this was the thirty-third time Forest had yelled at her for Rosy.

Without hesitation, Forest scooped Rosy up, who was wearing Rain's pajamas.

Rain looked up and clearly saw Rosy's provocative gaze.

In that moment, she suddenly felt like an outsider in her own home.

The favored one was indeed reckless.

Rain couldn't understand how she had been defeated by a substitute.

She watched helplessly as Forest carried Rosy back to the guest room, carefully tending to her wounds.

Rain peered through the crack of the door, puzzled: Was it because Rosy was younger? Or was she just better at playing the victim?

Forest had given Rosy a lot of money as compensation and had excitedly prepared for their wedding afterward.

Rosy hadn't given up, causing trouble many times.

Each time, Forest had simply resolved it.

Back then, whenever Rosy caused a scene, Forest always stood by her side.

He had given Rain a luxurious wedding that all the women in S City envied.

He had customized several wedding dresses for Rain, making her try them on one by one.

As she looked, her eyes turned red, and he quietly told her, "You know, Rain, from the first moment I saw you in college, I envisioned the scene of marrying you."

At that grand wedding, Forest spoke endlessly, holding Rain's hand tightly.

When he finished with the words, "I will reward my virtuous wife with countless riches," Rosy had cried like a waterfall in the audience.

She stood there, fragile, gazing at Forest with longing, biting her lip in grievance, and murmured, "What about me?"

Rosy pulled out her phone and coldly said, "Forest Land, open your eyes and see what kind of woman is standing next to you! Do you know how many men she's been with abroad?!"

"Rosy Summi, shut up!" Forest angrily rebuked.

He snatched the phone from Rosy and smashed it to pieces, slapping her hard.

"What right do you have to speak about Rain? Who gave you the audacity?" Forest warned.

Rosy trembled and fell to the ground, blood trickling from her mouth, looking quite pitiful.

Stubbornly, she stood up and walked away from the wedding venue step by step.

In that instant, Rain clearly saw a hint of reluctance in Forest's expression.

He was pained for her.

After Rosy left, Forest seemed somewhat distracted for the rest of the wedding proceedings.

As Rain recalled this, she suddenly realized.

It was from that moment that she had lost.

But she was unwilling to accept it.

"I'll stay here with Rosy; don't just stand there like a wooden statue at the door," Forest said with a hint of disdain in his eyes.

Chapter 3

Rain had no choice but to leave.

Forest didn't return to their master bedroom that night.

Rain stood by the floor-to-ceiling window in the master bedroom, holding the ultrasound report, staring blankly at the colorful lights of the tall buildings outside.

The same colorful lights as over a year ago, but now they bore words she had never seen before.

Rain closed her eyes, recalling how after the wedding, she had followed Forest back to his villa.

A slightly tipsy Forest had pressed her against the mirror and kissed her cheek. "I'm sorry, baby; today's wedding wasn't perfect."

Rain said nothing.

"Don't worry, I won't believe a word Rosy says; I only love you..."

Forest murmured, nestling into the crook of Rain's shoulder.

Rain turned to him, her fingertips brushing against his familiar brows and eyes.

Yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that he felt strangely distant.

Clearly, she had finally become his bride.

For years, she had dreamed of this day.

Rain Frost couldn't help but lean closer to Forest Land.

Yet, Forest avoided her kiss.

As Rain stood there in shock, Forest took her hand and led her to the floor-to-ceiling window.

"Don't rush; today is our wedding day, and I have a gift for you."

As the clock struck midnight, Rain watched as the tall buildings outside suddenly lit up with scrolling lights that read:

[Rain Frost, Forest Land will love you forever!]

[Hand in hand, growing old together!]

In that moment, Rain's heart melted into a puddle.

Forest had actually remembered.

He remembered his promise to her.

He had said he would buy all the city's scrolling advertisements on their wedding day to declare his love to her.

He wanted everyone to know how he felt.

The wedding and the illuminated confession gave Rain the confidence she needed.

She pushed the face of the substitute named Rosy out of her mind and happily kissed Forest.

But just as their kiss grew passionate, Forest seemed to drift away.

Who was he thinking about?

Rain lowered her eyes, wondering if Forest was kissing her while his heart was still with her substitute.

The next moment, Forest's phone rang.

Without hesitation, he pushed Rain away.

"I need to take this call," he said.

Rain nodded, feeling a sense of unease.

The room fell silent, and she could clearly hear the conversation on the other end of the line.

"Mr. Land, Rosy is at our bar tonight, drinking heavily with a lot of liquor and beer..."

Forest glanced at Rain's expression, frowning impatiently. "Let her be; she can drink as much as she wants!"

"But Rosy's health..." the person on the other end didn't finish before Forest hung up.

"Is it something serious?" Rain asked intentionally.

"Nothing serious; no one is more important than you," Forest said, punctuating each word, unsure if he was reminding her or himself.

Just as Rain thought they could continue their intimacy, another WhatsApp message popped up.

Frustrated, Forest opened the video and froze.

"I need to step out for a bit; you should get some rest," he said.

Rain watched as Forest's expression changed dramatically.

She pointed out the window. "It's starting to rain, Forest."

The weather forecast had warned of heavy rain tonight.

"Don't worry; I'll be back soon."

Rain softly asked, "Is... something happening with Rosy?"

"It's nothing; Rosy... she's just not feeling well. I'll be back quickly."

With that, Forest grabbed his car keys and rushed out.

After hesitating for two minutes, Rain decided to follow him.

She took a taxi, trailing behind Forest's car to a bar.

All the way, Forest drove recklessly, nearly colliding with other vehicles multiple times, making Rain's heart race.

From the car, she watched as Forest dashed into the bar without even opening an umbrella, braving the downpour.

Minutes later, Rain saw Forest pull a staggering Rosy out of the bar.

"If you don't want to die, get to the hospital!" Forest said coldly.

Forest was angry.

When Rain used to neglect her health and work late nights, he wore the same expression.

"Get away! You're married now! Why do you care? Go take care of your white moonlight!" Rosy yelled in the rain.

"Fine, don't ever bother me again," Forest replied indifferently.

But Rosy grabbed him, kissing him passionately despite the rain.

And Forest did not refuse this kiss in the downpour.

Rain sat in the car, watching them at the bar's entrance, feeling like a clown.

He had clearly said that his heart had always belonged to her.

Rain looked up, tears blurring her vision as she gazed at the colorful lights on the buildings.

The massive [Rain Frost, Forest Land will love you forever!] had become a cruel mockery.
